Recreate the ultimate British bistro classic, golden chips and perfectly cooked rump steak, all in one air fryer basket. This low-fat, fuss-free version delivers crispy chips and tender steak without deep frying, using just a spoonful of oil. Ideal for a hearty weeknight dinner or a relaxed weekend treat.

Ingredients

  • 1.2 kg (about 2.6 lb) Maris Piper or King Edward potatoes
  • 1 tbsp olive oil (or 1 Actifry spoonful)
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper
  • 4 rump steaks (approx. 120g each)

Tip: For extra flavour, sprinkle chips with smoked paprika or rosemary before cooking.

Method

Step 1

Prep Chips: Peel potatoes and cut into 13mm (½-inch) batons. Rinse under cold water, then pat very dry with kitchen paper, this is key for crispiness.

Step 2

Load Air Fryer: Place chips in the air fryer basket (or Actifry bowl with paddle). Drizzle with oil, sprinkle with salt and pepper, and toss to coat.

Step 3

Set Total Time: If using an Actifry 2-in-1, set total cooking time to 45 minutes and select the “Steak” programme. * For standard air fryers: Cook chips at 200°C (390°F) for 30 minutes, shaking halfway.

Step 4

Add Steak: After 35 minutes (or when chips have 10 minutes left), place seasoned steaks on a tray (Actifry) or directly on top of the chips (standard air fryer).

Step 5

Finish Cooking: Cook for the final 10 minutes until steaks reach your desired doneness: * Rare: 8–10 mins * Medium: 10–12 mins * Well done: 13–15 mins

Step 6

Rest & Serve: Let steaks rest for 3–5 minutes before serving alongside the chips.

Note for Actifry Users: The Actifry’s dual-zone cooking (bowl + tray) allows steak and chips to cook simultaneously without flavour transfer.
